Here’s a daily reminder that all ideas want to be free. Today, we don’t just want want tools to co-create their own solutions, we expect them. In the years ahead, companies that block or stifle outside innovation will be made irrelevant.
Apple released the ridiculously popular iPhone a few weeks ago, but offer AT&T as your only service provider choice. If you don’t want an AT&T plan, you just bought a very bulky iPod!
A resourceful hacker has already unlocked the restrictive software. You can use the iPhone with any wireless provider you want after following his detailed instructions. Software only designed to serve a self-interested business model is doomed to fail. People want the freedom to use their digital tools how they please. Thanks, but no thanks, Steve Jobs. I will not be purchasing an iPhone today. Please come again!
Think Different - Just Like Bill Gates
Apple needs to open up it’s doors to outside invention, release it’s API’s, and provide customers with tools to enhance it’s products. They have a world-class marketing department but at some point they will run out of features to sell. Companies like IBM, Amazon, and Procter & Gamble realized this years ago and actively encourage 3rd party innovators to do their hacking for free. People don’t like being held hostage but get excited when they feel they are a part of something great. It’s unbelievable Apple openly markets OS X as “based on UNIX” but turns a blind eye to open-source development.
I love Macs (I’m using one right now to write this article) but I’m not suckered by the “Apple versus Microsoft = Good versus Evil” debate. Apple uses nearly the same business strategy as Microsoft; only they own a smaller market share.
I nearly peed my pants laughing when I read what Maddox had to say about the iPhone (warning: very foul language! Not for kids or for those easily offended.)
